Church History
In 1915, a few faithful Baptist believers met weekly for prayer and Bible study, in what was then the old McIntire Hall, at140 East Richardson AvenueinLanghorne,Pennsylvania. This building later became the home of the Advance Paper Company. Today it is theLanghorneProfessionalCenter.
As the group began to expand, it was agreed that a pastor should lead them. The Lord called the Rev. George Miller ofNew Brunswick,New Jersey. Under Rev. Miller’s leadership, a charter was secured to form the First Baptist Church of Langhorne. The group next desired a church home; thus they began to purchase the old homestead of Mrs. Anna Davis on Richardson Avenue.
With the wisdom and foresight of a few faithful followers, the church continued to grow and prosper. First Baptist has always been a family church, a place where families came together to worship, where children learned about faith, giving, perseverance and serving the Lord through the examples set by their parents and adult church members.
In 1983, God sent another spiritual leader, Rev. Clarence E. Lockett. Rev. Lockett presided over the church for 20 years, and in that time theFirstBaptistChurchfamily came to know him, as a man of God, a friend, a respected leader, a spiritual advisor and a positive role model for the youth. He began a radio ministry and a yearly Vacation Bible School which involved participation with other community churches.
During Rev. Lockett’s tenureFirstBaptistChurchrealized tremendous growth and expansion. In 1992, with the support of church officers and members, Rev. Lockett spearheaded a renovation project which enabled the physical building to be enlarged and remodeled, reconstructing the church’s interior layout and reflecting a more up-to-date facility. During 1998-1999 the church acquired several properties adjacent to the main building. In 2001, Rev. Lockett led the church in a building project to expand the main sanctuary and the fellowship hall, which is now known as “Minister Gloria Lockett Fellowship Hall”. The project was completed in October of 2001 and dedicated in November 2001. In May of 2004 Rev. Lockett retired and the honorary title of “Pastor Emeritus” was bestowed upon him as a result of his dedicated and devoted service of 21 years.
On November 8, 2007 Rev. Luke N. Mason became Pastor of First Baptist Church of Langhorne.
